Villadoro Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2006

Imagine dumping the contents of a can of off-brand stewed tomatoes down this sink, giving the can a quick rinse, and then refilling the can with red, Italian wine. That is very much the experience of drinking this wine, and it is a fantastic experience.

If I wrote a “proper” wine review about this wine (i.e., trying to shill lame wine on palates that the writers pretentiously assume to be less-than-discerning… as if most of the buying public lacks both noses and tongues), I would have to say that “The wine has a nose and palate redolent of refreshing red fruits and a limber body ready to be paired with roasted white meats and fresh pastas,” but what that leaves out is that:

- The Villadoro Montepulciano d’Abruzzo has been made by some truly gutsy people who have not at all catered to any one person’s palate, and instead, have decided to create a wine that tastes like the foliage and dirt of the south side of central Italy.

- It is a light, almost watery wine that many people would be put off by when scoring it in their heads because they may forget that this wine was made to be drunk, and drunk with food, not scored in magazines.

- Tomatoes are red fruits, too.

Give the VIlladoro a shot if you’re looking for wine with both a personality and a purpose. Yes, the finish is short, and the body is light, but the flavors are unique and substantial.
